MODERATE BIKING      29 DAYS
Trip SPN

Use your Spanish language skills every day! Biking from Lugo along Roman walls, over arched bridges, and past medieval hilltop walled towns brings history to life. Bike in a beautiful river valley and cross into Portugal, the great maritime center of the Middle Ages. Back in Spain, gorgeous cycling along coast roads leads you to the ferry for 2 days on Isla Cies, a spectacular island national park where cars are not allowed. Try tasty empanadas and delicious Spanish treats in Santiago de Compostela, where narrow medieval streets recall pilgrims who walked hundreds of miles in the Middle Ages to pray at the ancient cathedral that you visit.

Leave your bikes in Madrid for a week of sightseeing in some of Europe's most fascinating cities. Watch the Spanish countryside fly by from your sleeping berth on the night train to Granada. Tour the amazing Alhambra and see a flamenco show as you explore this cit's historic Arabian influences. Barcelona, located on the northeastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula, is the fourth most visited city in Europe behind London, Paris and Rome. It has a wonderful summertime Mediterranean climate; dry with low humidity. A perfect place to take in the Mediterranean Sea, the group will spend a day of picnicking and swimming on the beach. There is plenty of history, tradition, and culture for the group to take in as you explore this vibrant city.

Your last stop is Madrid, where you'll see all the famous sights, including the Prado Museum and royal palace, and eat lunch at an outdoor plaza café (don't feed the pigeons – it just encourages them!)

“I can’t quite put into words what leading our trip has meant to me. It was by far the most rewarding thing I have ever done as well as being one of the greatest times of my life. Thank you so much for making that possible.

Gordy (Gordon Scannell, leader 1972 and 1974) was thrilled to hear all about our adventures and look at pictures from our trip. He is glad to know that not too much has changed since his era - that the same integrity and care is being put into childrens’ summers as it was 30 years ago. It’s really a remarkable program.”

Jon Moncton, leader
